Trauma and PTSD
Compassionate, evidence-based support for trauma recovery
Something terrible happened and it continues to affect you. Maybe you…
Have memories that intrude constantly - when you work, play with your kids, are intimate with your partner, or just trying be alone.
Feel angry or irritable all the time, or have large swings in you mood, and don’t know why.
Feel numb to life and you can’t find the “spark” in the things you used to love.
Feel isolated from everyone around you and don’t know how to feel connected again.
Are confused by your own internal experiences and feel like everything you feel is both foreign and dangerous.
Find yourself repeating the same painful patterns in relationships and don’t know why
Have nightmares or are unable to fall asleep or sleep through the night.
You’ve tried to cope the best you can. Maybe you…
Only go places that feel safe, but are finding that list to get smaller and smaller.
Are constantly on edge and can’t relax without substances or distractions.
Feel a profound sense of guilt, shame, or sorrow about what happened to you.
Find yourself escaping from experiences and people but this is giving you no relief.
My Approach
Trauma can shatter your worldview into a million pieces. I can help you piece these back together. Discussing trauma is never easy or comfortable, but we will begin with whatever difficulty you are most willing to tackle first.
We may start with the story of your trauma, the meaning it carries for you, and seeing if we can shift that narrative to one that helps you find peace, power, and resilience. We may identify patterns that you have towards your emotions and relationships, patterns that made sense in the context of trauma but are no longer serving you now, and learn skills to change these patterns. Or we may confront the memories and avoided situations directly, in order to reduce the grip they have over you.
Regardless of the approach, I make sure to foster a relationship that feels safe and secure, so you know that you are making the key decisions about what happens in therapy every step of the way.
My Experience
I have extensive training in several evidence-based therapies for PTSD and trauma:
Prolonged Exposure (PE)
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR)
I also draw on my experience with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help clients utilize effective coping skills as they engage in this difficult work.
I trained with the PTSD Clinical Team at the James J. Peters Bronx VA Hospital, where I worked with veterans with combat trauma and military sexual trauma. I also trained with the Confidential Support Team at Stanford University, a clinic specializing in the support and treatment of college students affected by sexual and gender-based violence on campus.
I sought post-doctoral training in EMDR and get ongoing supervision to advance my skills.
I am currently a staff psychologist at the Center for Motivation and Change, where I provide trauma-informed therapy for individuals who struggle with co-occurring substance use and compulsive behaviors.
